Across Canada Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 11, 2026
Across Canada turns the steps you already take into a virtual walk across Canada. It was built so that your health data never leaves your devices. This policy explains exactly what the app reads, what it stores, and the few cases where it talks to the internet.
The short version
• Across Canada does not collect, sell, or share your personal data.
• There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party tracking code.
• Your step history is read from Apple Health on your device and is never uploaded anywhere.
• The only data that leaves your device is a small settings record synced through your own iCloud account, and ordinary web requests for map tiles, place photos, and Wikipedia summaries.
Health data
With your permission, Across Canada reads the following from Apple Health:
• Daily step count, or daily wheelchair push count if you choose wheelchair mode
• Walking step length, when available, to estimate the distance you've covered
• Height, when available, as a fallback for estimating step length
The app only reads this data. It never writes to Apple Health.
Your step history is not stored by the app. Each time Across Canada opens, it reads your history from Apple Health again and recalculates your position on the route. If you delete the app, nothing about your activity remains behind, and your Health data is untouched.
Health data is never sent to us or to any third party. It is not used for advertising, analytics, research, or any purpose other than showing your progress inside the app.
You can revoke access at any time in the Health app under Sharing, then Apps and Services. The app will keep working with whatever data you allow.
Data stored on your device
Across Canada keeps a small amount of information locally:
• Your journey settings: which route you chose, your start date, stride length, route scale, units, and movement type
• Display preferences such as appearance, map colours, and app icon
• A record of journeys you have completed
• Notification preferences and the last milestone you were notified about
• Cached photos and place summaries, so pages you've already opened load without a connection
This information stays on your device and is removed if you delete the app.
iCloud sync
Your journey settings, roughly 200 bytes consisting of route, start date, stride, scale, units, and movement type, are mirrored to iCloud Key-Value Storage. This lets a new iPhone pick up where you left off without needing a backup restore. This data lives in your personal iCloud account under Apple's iCloud terms. We cannot see it. No step data or activity history is synced.
Apple Watch
If you use the Apple Watch app, your iPhone sends the watch your journey settings and your daily step totals so both devices show the same journey. This happens directly between your own paired devices using Apple's Watch Connectivity framework. It does not pass through any server of ours.
Widgets
Home screen widgets and watch complications read a small snapshot of your progress from a shared container on your device. Nothing is transmitted.
Internet connections
Across Canada does not operate any servers. It makes three kinds of ordinary web requests, each of which exposes your IP address to the provider in the same way any website visit does:
• Apple Maps supplies the map tiles for the map views and widget images. These requests are governed by Apple's privacy policy.
• Wikipedia supplies the short summaries shown on landmark pages. When you open a landmark, the app requests the article for that place by name. The request contains the place name and nothing about you or your activity.
• Wikimedia Commons supplies the photographs of landmarks and the provincial flags.
Responses are cached on your device so repeat visits can work offline. None of these requests include your name, step counts, position on the route, or any identifier tied to you.
Notifications
Milestone alerts and the optional morning recap are local notifications scheduled on your device. No notification data goes through a remote push service.
Ratings prompt
After you have walked for at least a week, the app may ask once per version whether you'd like to rate it. This uses Apple's standard review prompt, which Apple handles under its own privacy policy. We receive no personal information from it.
Children
Across Canada is rated 4+ and does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children.
Your choices
• Revoke Health access in the Health app at any time.
• Turn notifications off in Settings.
• Disable iCloud Drive or iCloud Key-Value sync for the app in your device's iCloud settings.
• Reset your journey in the app's Settings to clear your local settings.
• Delete the app to remove everything it stored on your device.
Changes to this policy
If the app ever begins handling data differently, this page will be updated and the effective date changed. Material changes will be noted in the App Store release notes.
