M2 MacBook Pro Schematics
Introducing the M2 MacBook Pro schematics - rebuilt and meticulously updated for the new 2023 MacBook Pros.
I am proud to release new Schematics for the 2023 M2 MacBook Pros. This project has been in the making for a considerable time, and I am pleased & relieved to be finally releasing it.
How We Got Here
In 2021, on the heels of having just released the schematics of the iPhone 13 Pro & iPhone 12, I got to work on the just announced M1-series MacBook Pro. The project was daunting for my skillset at the time - challenging me to learn vector design simultaneously as I slogged through the design process.
And after over a month of work, I finally completed and released the designs and followed those up shortly after with a set of complimentary light/dark mode wallpapers. These wallpapers instantly became one of my most positively received works. I have a very soft spot for these designs because, as some of my earliest works, they helped me make my mark in the design community.
But never resting on my laurels, new Apple products resulted in new schematics, with me continuing to develop my techniques for constructing them. The Studio Display, released in April, is where I began experimenting with depth and shading, which continued to be refined in my schematic for the M2 MacBook Air & most recently, the iPhone 14 lineup.
And throughout this past year, I would periodically go back to the MacBook Pro, tweak a part here, add a piece there. But that only amounted to a little more of a playground for me to conceptualize what I might like the next MacBook Pro schematic to look like.
The Process
The second Apple announced their new M2 MacBook Pros, I booted up Sketch and began overhauling my previous 14-and-16-inch schematics. The first step was deciding on a starting point: should I start these schematics from scratch or try building off my existing designs? With tons of hours at stake by this decision, I decided that I would begin to update one of the current designs, but if, for whatever reason, that became too cumbersome to rejig everything, I would start over. Given how novice I was when I started, many of the layers and pieces were poorly grouped and hastily organized, so it was entirely in the realm of possibility that a fresh start would have been the more time-effective and less frustrating avenue to take.
Pictured above is a side-by-side comparison of the 2021 MacBook Pro Schematic (left) & the 2023 MacBook Pro Schematic (right). Pieces like the fans, batteries, and speakers have visibly been overhauled to provide more depth and detail as compared with the previous version.
Fortunately, this upgrade option became a viable path to take. This allowed me to modify thousands of existing pieces rather than redrawing and layering them from scratch though there isn't a piece on this project that wasn't updated or refined in some way. Every layer, from the fans to the smallest 2x2 square, was updated with new colouring, textures, gradients, curvatures, shading, text, and more. Several hundred pieces were wholly redrawn, and hundreds more were added to help make the schematic more lively and dimensional. This includes designing the SoC, exposing some previously covered components, adding new chips, dramatically improving the detail of the fans, and more. In addition to using images from iFixit, and screen grabs from teardowns by Max Tech, I've greatly benefitted from Apple recently releasing their repair guides. Each of these has provided more angles & closeups to help make these designs as detailed & accurate as possible.
Every piece was improved upon for this wallpaper, from updating each chip to designing the SoC and completely remaking the exhaust fans.
In the end, these new M2 MacBook Pro schematics come in at 3732 pieces for the 14-inch, and 3706 parts for the 16-inch. They're available in six refreshed colour variations: M2 Pro, M2 Max, Midnight, Night Mode (inspired by the Apple Watch Ultra), Golden, and Tropical. And because of the many internal similarities between the M1 & M2 MacBook Pros, these wallpapers remain highly accurate representations for owners of MacBook Pros released in 2021. Enjoy.
