I've written about this before, but this has been a challenging year creatively for me. Feeling spread very thin and weighed down by work stresses and other obligations, the time to create and the spirit to be creative have been reduced substantially. That can be seen in the drop in wallpaper production; I have released five original wallpapers onto the main blog since March.
Recently, and perhaps controversially, I tried to jump-start my creativity by re-upping my lapsed subscription to Midjourney to play around with various art styles, mediums, and ideas. These platforms help me quickly imagine hundreds of patterns, colour palettes, and art styles. Less composer than a critic, I can curate and refine thousands of designs across several hours and generate artwork that resonates with me.
That was the process with Strokes. By experimenting with hundreds of prompt combinations and requesting different colour palettes and design elements, I began to generate pieces I could compare, select the ones I liked the most, and continue refining them. This process involved creating dozens of similar variations, upscaling them (both inside MidJourney and after inside Topaz), tidying and editing them inside Pixelmator Pro before finally preparing them for release in this set. The final process was using each of these wallpapers for several days on my devices to see how I felt looking at them day in and day out. Did I get tired of them? Did specific details spoil the overall design?
Five finalists endured that process: Loop, Slide, Swish, Wave, & Whirl. Together, they are a fantastic series that looks great on any display. Enjoy!
