Looks like Apple may have given us the closest thing it will ever get to a budget MacBook with the debut of the new 13-inch MacBook Neo, an A18 Pro powered entry-level Mac. Starting at $499 for education customers in the US, it comes in at half the price of an M5 MacBook Air.
And yes, there are plenty of compromises. No P3 display, no adaptive brightness, 8GB of RAM, an A18 Pro instead of an M-series chip, no backlit keyboard, and more. But for the market Apple is targeting, I can see this laptop being a massive hit.
