Midnight Mac

An exploration into the solitude of working late into the night.

Working with AI-image generators like Midjourney these past few months has been an enthralling & creative rabbit hole. Some recent works were directly composed in MidJourney, like my Big Starry Sur or macOS Meets Van Gogh series. At the same time, I also use Midjourney to explore and experiment with ideas, exposing myself to new artwork styles and gathering creative ideas for upcoming projects.

Recently, I got the idea to make a modern version of Edward Hopper's famous 1942 Nighthawks’ oil painting, which was bundled with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. The image is iconic for capturing the loneliness and separation existing in American life at the time. With that mood as my target, I wanted to see how Midjourney could recreate a modern version of this style.

After many dozen tweaks, revisions, variations, and modifications, I created a few images that I was pleased with in their ability to capture the solitary motif of Hopper's work. These 'Midnight Mac' images evoke memories of my time in university, working late into the night in lonely campus corridors or at some diner or cafe into the morning hours. I'm posting a few variations upscaled to 6K. Enjoy.
